Who is behind Norman & Vera?
The inspiration behind Norman & Vera Garden Emporium comes from David Hurrion, one of the UK’s most respected and engaging gardening experts.
Gardening has been a lifelong passion for David – he’s a trained horticulturist, teacher, and journalist, with experience working on nurseries, teaching at colleges, and editing some of the nation’s leading gardening magazines. You may recognise him from practical videos for BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine, hosting stages at live gardening events or leading garden tours around the globe.
Why Norman & Vera?
These were David’s uncle and auntie who, along with other relatives, were keen gardeners themselves and encouraged him to learn about plants and the natural world.
Having been through WW2, they were happy to make-do-and-mend, to grow their own food and lead active lives. Meanwhile the style of their homes and furniture, as well as tastes in fashion, were undoubtedly ‘mid century’. All this imprinted itself on David as he was growing up, and this website is named in memory of that whole generation of his relatives no longer with us.
